Polynesian settlers brought Lomi Lomi Massage to Hawaii over 1000 years ago. It’s considered a healing practice by the Hawaiians. Lomi Lomi Massage can be done with a light, medium or deep pressure. The Massage Therapist uses his/her hands to do downward (toward the table) kneading strokes and uses his/her forearms and elbows in long strokes up or down the body.
The Massage Therapist moves in a motion like the waves of the ocean, or like the Hula. Lomi Lomi Massage goes right over the bones, articulations, and muscles and therefore is therapeutic. Lomi Lomi is very relaxing when done with medium pressure and very effective when combined with Deep Tissue. We have 60 min, 75 min, 90 min, and 2 Hour Lomi Lomi Massage treatments.
Lomi Lomi, or loving hands is a form of massage that originated in Hawaii. Following the idea that a belief can block energy flow as much as muscle tension can, Lomi Lomi helps release the blockages and simultaneously gives the energy new direction. Thus Lomi Lomi is not just a physical experience-it also facilitates healing on the mental, emotional and spiritual levels and increases well being.
A Temple Lomi session usually begins with the practitioner’s hands gently resting on the client’s back. In this stillness, the practitioner will quietly or silently say a blessing or prayer asking for whatever healing is needed to take place during the massage. Additionally, the client may be asked to set their intention for any healing they would like to receive.
The therapist then works intuitively with the client. In this respect there is no set format or sequence for the massage and no two massages will ever be identical. The massage is given in fluid, rhythmic motions. Some people have described Lomi Lomi feeling like gentle waves moving over the body.
Different parts of the body may be massaged at the same time, e.g. one arm or hand may be working on a shoulder and the other hand may be working on the opposite hip. This assists the recipient in relaxing and thus releasing tension-a key element of Lomi Lomi-as it is impossible, or at least extremely difficult, for the brain to focus on the two different areas at once. According to Huna philosophy, energy also gets blocked in the joints.
Gentle stretches of the body and gentle rotations of the joints are incorporated to assist the release of tension and assist the flow of energy. Not forcing, but feeling the level of the client’s resistance or comfort. Lomi Lomi Massage actually pushes the muscle tissue into the bones and articulations (joints) of the body. A result is a refined approach to releasing muscles.
The islands are home to a form of massage so spiritually centered that it begins with a prayer. Its name means nothing more than to-and-fro or rub-rub, but the practice is anything but ordinary.
